Glossary

Bandwidth
Bandwidth is the amount of data your website can transmit to your all of your customer's computers in 1 month. On our starter solution you have 3Gb of bandwidth or 3072Mb (3×1024) So if for example your site has 3 pages each a megabyte in size then 1024 people can download and view you web pages per month. Not To be confused with hosting storage
Domain Name
Occasionally referred to as a web address your registered domain name is the bit that comes after www. My domain name is culpitt.co.uk.
F.T.P.
This stands for File Transfer Protocol and is the method used to transfer the files that make up your web site from our computers to the servers that will store your web site.
Gigabyte (Gb)
A large unit of computer storage space. 1Gb = 1024Mb
Hosting
Storing your website on a large server. This is a service we buy in from another company.
Hosting Storage Space
This is the amount of room your web site can take up online. If for example you buy our Basic Hosting Solution then your web site can take up to 1Gb of storage space. So if you have 1024 pages of 1Mb in size you will have taken up all of the storage space.
Megabyte (Mb)
A unit of computer storage space
mysql
A database system that allows you to store large amounts of structured data on your web site. This is the sort of thing you would need for an online catalogue of products for example
PHP
This is a programming language that allows you to create interactive web pages, the sort you would need for say an online shop, or appointment system
Spider
This is an automatic program from the search engines that works it's way through your site and adds details of your web pages to the search engine's index.
Web Server
A large computer that is permanently connected to the Internet. This is where your web site is hosted. Running such a machine is a specialised business. We buy this service for you from another company called a hosting provider. There is a fee for this service which generally covers a year's hosting.
